Crisp potato fries tossed in a honey-chilli glaze, finished with sesame seeds and spring onion. Served fresh at Desi Swag East Indian Cuisine on St. Mary's Road in St. Vital, and available for dine-in, takeout and delivery across south Winnipeg.
Honey Chilli Fries are the first thing most tables order and the first thing to disappear. Potato fries go into the fryer twice — once to cook, once to crisp — then straight into a wok with honey, red chilli, garlic and a splash of vinegar that reduces to a lacquer.
Sesame seeds and sliced spring onion go on last, while the glaze is still tacky. The result is sweet, hot and sour at once, crunchy at the tips and sticky at the centre. It is a vegetarian starter that carnivores fight over, and it disappears fastest on student nights and weekend tables.

"Amazing food and great service. Butter chicken and biryani were full of flavour, and the staff checked on us regularly. One of the best Indian restaurants in Winnipeg."
Yes. The glaze is built from honey, chilli, garlic and vinegar, with no meat or meat stock. It does contain honey, so it is not vegan.
Medium. The honey takes the edge off the chilli, so the heat is warming rather than sharp. We can add more chilli if you would like.
They are best eaten fresh, while the crust is still crisp. For pickup orders from St. Mary's Road we glaze them at the last moment so they hold their texture on the way home.
